Principles of motion

So just how do you make movements more realistic?

Squash and stretch
Anticipation
Staging
Follow through and overlapping action
Slow in and Slow out

Anthropomorphism

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities.
eg Winnie the Pooh, Thomas the tank engine, the Pixar lamp

This is different to personification, which is a form of anthropomorphism where you use figurative language to give inanimate objects humanlike characteristics in a metaphorical and representative way.
eg The sun smiled down on us.
The wind howled in the night. Lightning danced across the sky.

Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping is an animation technique that animators use to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame, to produce realistic action.

  • Often looks less life-like due to not allowing for the animation principles
  • Can sometimes create an uncanny-valley effect
  • Can sometimes look great
  • Is a ‘fast’ alternative to frame by frame animation
